P.s JC racing (https://www.jcracingproducts.co.uk/) in the uk has body’s and wheels that use current 2.2 buggy tires and you can get them in pink if you want to keep that classics look. RCkicks on YouTube has a lot of info on upgrades to help if you are planning to race it in a vintage class.
I can't stress how much fun it was to build this kit! Keep it up Yokomo!
What else can I say in review. Been out of RC for 30+ years, so this review is heavily nostalgic. But, compared with other cars I've built, this kit excellent. I really appreciated the thought and little details that went into making it. Ootosan Masaaki really put it in there. It blows my mind that this design can still handle modern electrics and tracks. The drivetrain is indeed elegantly simple. A couple of diffs, a couple of belts, and that's pretty much it. I threw a lot of power at it, but just tightening the slipper, it handles it just fine. It rips! It drives very smooth and nimble, the motor shrieks and the belts hum, and watching that roof scoop rip by is glorious. The only sore spot is the springs on the dampers. As many have said, they are too stiff, and I'm not sure what alternatives work good.
There are some essential upgrades, in my unqualified opinion, a top deck, carbon shock towers, a solid steering brace (unfair, yeah racing, exo), and the aluminium shock tops. Adding a top deck significantly stiffens the chassis, revealing the way too stiff damper springs. Carbon shock towers add a lot of durability, no question. Adding a solid steering ackermann gives very precise steering. The shock tops helps remove trapped air and reduces the super bouncy rear end. I did try some aftermarket aluminium steering blocks, but the stock ones have a much better fit for the bearings. Titanium screws and turnbuckles are totally overkill, but if you have the means, go for it.
Now then, the first run out, just to see anything falls off, my neighbor wanted to have a go. The car was immediately stuffed into a concrete barrier at full throttle. A broken A-arm, bent hinge pin and bent shock screw. Everything else was fine! The good news is Amain has all the replacement parts available now! Also consider investing in modern 2.2" wheels and tires for carpet/indoor racing, if you're into that.
In conclusion, this is the best kit I've ever put together. I'm super happy that Yokomo put this out. It gives me a smile every time I go to plug in the battery. For nostalgia, it's instabuy, for newbies, the 870c or yz10 still have so much potential in the basic design you just need to decide if you want a roof scoop or not. Choose Roof Scoop my friend.
