RC Wing Height & Wing Styles

Wings are crucial in controlling the stability and nimbleness of your RC buggy or race truck. In this post, ProTrek RC PRO Team Driver Adam Drake discusses wing height and his preferred wing styles.

When it comes to wing height, it's pretty straightforward - if you want more stability, run the wing a little higher. I always use the +15 wing mount which raises the wing and moves it forward 6mm. If you want your car to be more nimble, lower the wing. If it's windy, lowering the wing will help it catch less air and keep the car steady. You can also drill holes in the wing to help with resistance and increase airflowthis is great for windy track days. If the wind dies down, the track gets loose, and you need a little more grip, you can simply cover the holes with decals.

Wing Styles

As for wing styles, there are many options available, but the two I use on my 1/8 scale MBX8T truck and MBX8R race buggy are the JConcepts F2I wing and the Mugen MBX8R wing. My go to is the JConcepts wing, because I like the extra cornering speed it offers. Both PRO team drivers Ryan Maifield and my wife Ronda run the JConcepts and Mugen wings on their race cars as well.

These wings are available in black, white, and yellow, which gives you the ability to customize them to match your color scheme. The JConcepts wing has a wicker bill, which can be cut off or drilled to release more air. This extra airflow helps prevent the wing from catching the wind and upsetting the car. On the other hand, the Mugen MBX8R wing offers more downforce, providing excellent grip. Watch my video on wing mounting and installing graphics for more helpful tips.

Summary

Ultimately, your choice of wing will depend on your driving style and the track conditions. For example, if you're on a loose track and want extra stability and grip, go for the MBX8R wing or the JConcepts F2I wing with the wicker bill on. But if you're looking for a more nimble feel and increased corner speed, the JConcepts wing with the wicker bill cut-off might be a better option.
