Traxxas X-Maxx Rear Upper/Lower Bulkhead
I really like that Traxxas makes pieces like these reasonably affordable. Now tell me why a couple of Arrma shock rod ends are nearly the same price. Anyways....this quality of the bulkhead is fine, except for one thing. Every X-Maxx I've ever touched, owned, or worked on has the same issue. The center differential main gear and the output gear on the intermediate shaft (the "transmission gears" if you will) have too tight of a mesh. They always have at least one tight spot in them that if not properly addressed can put a very noticeable drag on the driveline. This is noticeable both in sound and performance. I have found that usually the best way to address this is to tighten down all of the screws holding the upper bulkhead onto the lower bulkhead, including the intermediate shaft cover screws. Then slowly loosen them one at a time in small increments until you notice the gear mesh getting better. On my personal X-Maxx, I found the magic combination to be the line of three screws at the rear of the bulkhead. The two rear intermediate shaft cover screws and the other upper bulkhead screw that is in line with them. By tightening these three screws all the way down and then loosening them each about a half turn, I was able to resolve the gear mesh issue to a tolerable level. For clarity, this is a process I went through with brand new bulkhead, gears, bearings, and rebuilt differential. I can only assume the original design of this bulkhead simply placed these two gears slightly too close together and Traxxas has never bothered to address it.
