About The RTR 2WD Slash VXL

Chassis

The Slash VXL Brushless 1/10 RTR 2WD Short Course Truck stands out as a formidable machine in the world of off-road RC racing and bashing, boasting a chassis designed for unparalleled durability and performance. Traxxas has engineered the chassis with a long-wheelbase design, measuring 13.2 inches, while providing over 3.5 inches of ground clearance. This configuration ensures stability and agility across a variety of terrains, from rocky trails to dirt tracks. Moreover, the chassis features drain holes and a battery tray channel for efficient routing of servo wires to the receiver, enhancing the overall cleanliness and functionality of the vehicle. Integrated chassis nerf bars further reinforce the structure, providing side body support during intense door-to-door racing, ensuring that the Slash VXL maintains its robust performance even under the most demanding conditions.

Electronics

In terms of electronics, the Slash VXL is equipped with cutting-edge technology to deliver unparalleled speed, control, and reliability. The Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) system harnesses the tire-shredding power of the Slash VXL's brushless motor, making it incredibly agile and easily controllable on a variety of surfaces, from loose dirt to smooth concrete. The advanced TQ radio system ensures precise control, allowing drivers to harness the extreme Velineon brushless power for speeds exceeding 60mph. With the Velineon brushless motor and electronic speed control, the Slash VXL delivers unmatched efficiency, speed, and run time, accepting a wide range of batteries including powerful 3-cell LiPo packs. The built-in low-voltage detection in the VXL-3s ESC helps maintain LiPo packs in top condition, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.

Drivetrain

The drivetrain of the Slash VXL is engineered for maximum durability and performance, capable of handling the brutal brushless horsepower delivered by the Velineon motor. Heavy-duty driveshafts equipped with extra-strong telescoping universal-joint design ensure that every watt of power is efficiently transmitted to the wheels, providing rocket-like thrust on the track. The Pro Series Magnum 272R transmission features a low-profile housing with a rock-solid aluminum motor plate, delivering competition-grade performance with all-metal gears and a sealed, silicone-filled differential for maximum traction. Additionally, the Torque-Control slipper clutch offers smooth, linear engagement and consistent traction control, while the all-metal internal gears ensure long-term reliability and precision performance. With these components working seamlessly together, the Slash VXL Brushless 1/10 RTR 2WD Short Course Truck delivers an exhilarating and reliable driving experience for RC enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Traxxas Slash VXL Brushless 1/10 RTR 2WD Short Course Truck (Fox)
I'm giving this 5 stars - so far very happy with my purchase. I picked this up to race at a local indoor dirt/clay track. The buggies have open wheels and the kid was breaking arms left and right (literally). We run on 2S, didn't change the pinion or spur gear out at all. On 2S it is fast - not too fast, but plenty fast. On 3S - it's a total rip! I can't run that on the track, but have done some crazy drifting with it! The TSM works great and really helps control it. The ESC has 3 modes and you can slow it down for the newbs.. I added the Bluetooth wireless module to my transmitter and can dial things in with my phone/app. This helps as navigating the menu on the controller with the buttons is no fun, this is way better. When I was running on the track, I noticed I needed a little less steering and my throttle could be dropped about 5-10% to really help control it. Of course this wasn't needed outdoors, but when trying to navigate a track quickly - sometimes I would spin around and the drop in throttle really prevented this and I was able to carry more speed.

I have modified mine - mostly to race, but it has helped in overall handling. I installed the Low CG kit on it. This dropped the chassis about 3/4" and the battery is centered so this helped. The stock shocks have little adjustability. I installed some ProLine shocks with 50 wt and that helped. I swapped the front steering servo for one that can operate much faster with more torque - way better steering response. Replaced the steering bell crank setup for an alloy version with bearings. Front arms replaced with RPM, ST hinge pins, alloy front block. I drilled out the center of the bell crank plastic mounting pins and used a very long screw from bottom plate to the chassis - this increased rigidity for steering and preciseness. Replaced all turnbuckles. I found that the body on the Slash and the rear motor, made this want to balloon off jumps and at speed. Dropped the front end a little, added 2.5 oz of weight at the nose (yes - 2.5 oz), tons of holes in body and good to go. If I pull the weight, I have to stab the brakes immediately off the jump to keep the nose down.

I have had no major issues with this - sure, I smoked the ESC once and that can happen, I broke arms and a few things racing. Beyond that - this is a tank and is way more durable that most cars I own. This is one that I give to the kiddo to drive and I don't worry about it!

Traxxas Slash VXL Brushless 1/10 RTR 2WD Short Course Truck (Fox)
While purchasing the product through amain was nice and easy and fast shipping. I have a couple issues that you might want to be aware of.
The Bad:
Just the product is not built like they use to be. I've gotten 2 runs out of the r/c and and have some issues with it. First, the VXL motor is binding i replaced the bearings and there was no difference. For this ill have to contact traxxas support to file a waranty claim (Lucky the Traxxas customer support is awesome). And the other thing is that the steering servo is no longer made with metal gears. I ended up stripping the servo because its made with plastic gears now. Also, the rear body mount screws that go into the shock tower were over torqued and stripped out the plastic from factory. For the cost of this r/c i'm just kind of disappointed. Prices are going up and quality is going down.
The Good:
When the r/c was running good before the motor started acting up it was a nice fast car. The new transmission is made with all metal gears (dissasembled to try and figure out the clicking noise the r/c was making but it ended up being a motor issue) and the differential is a sealed unit that can be greased or oiled. Also the new stability system works great it doesnt take the fun out of driving the r/c, i keep at 1/2 on and it doesn't affect how fast i wanna go.
Overall i would've rated higher but the motor giving me issues and the steering servo issue is whats knocking down the review for me. I mightve just gotten a defective motor but hopefully Traxxas will help me out. If you plan on swapping the esc and motor out for an after market set up just buy the brushed set up btw. Hopefully this review was helpfull!
