Tamiya NISMO Coppermix Body Set (Clear)
I bought this reluctantly after many months of waiting due to supply issues.
As one would expect from Tamiya, the fit and finish of the body is flawless. Of course being unpainted and uncut, you have to do the finishing yourself.
One benefit to this set is that not only does it come with molded light buckets and accessories (wing, mirrors) but also pre-cut masking sheet AND decals! No other Tamiya body set comes close to offering what I got with this body as I don’t believe any other body set offers pre-cut decals AND masks.
There were some issues I ran into when painting though so I’ll be brief.
First, masking up can be a challenge. Personally, I still cut mine out even though it was cut for me. Reason being is to get the right fitment but even then, it was a challenge as the pre-cut masks were already larger than they needed to be, which is strange given it’s normally the opposite with Tamiya.
While on the subject of masking, the taillight masks are frustratingly fiddly. Because of the odd shape of the “smaller” mask, you have to offer it up on the outside of the body to ensure you’ve got the position correct and then try and reverse it so the masks stick to the INSIDE. Pro tip: remove a small portion of backing at the tip and use angled tweezers to fit it in place.
The headlights do require painting and you’ll need Tamiya X-18 “Semi-gloss black” to finish it. Use Tamiya’s HG brushes and thin the paint enough with X-20A thinner to get a consistent texture. Not too runny and not too thick.
The taillights don’t require painting but as I don’t like the look of the “Euro-style” lights included with the kit, I opted to paint them in Tamiya TS-54 Clear Red. Again, optional but mine came out beautifully.
I haven’t detailed mine yet as I’m waiting for the paint to harden but I’ll report back when I’m finished.
Overall, if you want to look cool at the drift comps and prefer Tamiya build quality, this is THE body set to get.
