Model Kit Overview:
This is the Tamiya 1/48 Grumman FM-1 Wildcat Mk.V, also known as the Martlet Mk.V. This kit authentically recreates the FM-1 Wildcat and features four machine guns with both the U.S. Navy and Royal Navy markings with one seated pilot figure. One of the main U.S. Navy carrier-based fighters was the Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat which was introduced into service in 1942. The aircraft employed a foldable wing for efficient use on flight decks, along with six 12.7mm machine guns. While the Grumman began to focus more on the production of the F6F Hellcat, Eastern Air Lines took over production for the F4F-4. They created a mostly identical variant of the F4F-4, the FM-1 Wildcat, with the main difference being a decrease from six to four mounted 12.7mm machine guns. The Wildcat was later introduced to the Royal Navy and was known as the Martlet, a fictitious bird often seen in the English coats of arms. This aircraft continued to see action as an anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort until the end of the war.
