These negative reviews do not correspond to the quality of this truck. I have beaten the crap out of it and the only part I have broken was the front bumper. After sending this thing through hell and back I have fully disassembled to rebuild and none of the parts showed any significant wear. Gears looked brand new, no broken diff cup screws, nothing. The people leaving negative reviews on this are mistreating their RC or just do not understand that these are not built for slamming into the wall at 50 mph. I own over 20 hobby grade RC and this is by far the most realistic / fun to drive.
Out of the box, this is a great truck. I was very pleased when I received mine. Amain shipped it out very fast as well. The box stock setup for the suspension is great, spring rate feels good and the 30wt shock oil in all four shocks is a great balance between jumping and scale performance. Don't expect to be doing any crazy jumps or anything like others have said its certainly no open wheel air machine, it's a scale performance truck. Like all solid axle trucks it does tend to nose down if your light on the power, but on nice mellow sweeping jumps it jumps great. The truck does great off of drops as well. For the size of the truck the suspension in the rear is pretty ridiculous. I would say the rear travel is very close to the Hammer Rey which is a much longer, bigger truck. For what you get for the money is also pretty decent, the only gripe I have about the truck is that the stock servo is kinda meh and the bellcrank/ steering has a lot of play in it, say if you turn the wheels on a higher traction surface, because the servo saver has so much play it doesn't full go back to neutral or straight. That is mostly a minor nitpick though that you may not even notice on most surfaces, after all this isn't supposed to be a high traction surface truck. Along with that as well the stock tires don't help with that. The tires that come on it are a very soft compound and the foams are also soft. So far I have enjoyed them a lot on the dirt and various other surfaces like grass. I think a more medium compound tire would be better though, the desert claw tires on the truck seem more like a crawler tire because of how soft they are. They also balloon like crazy which is definitely a downside, that Is definitely not scale in that manner. I am a little disappointed in the stock bumper though, my second run with it, I broke it. I wasn't doing anything crazy or crashing into walls going fast, I was just driving it in my local dirt/ grass kind of water way if you will. It is known pretty well though that the front bumper breaks pretty easy. Thankfully its a cheap part and RPM makes a great upgraded bumper as well with an added skid plate. So far though I am enjoying it a lot to say the least, the looks alone make you just want to sit and stare at it for a couple days before you go get it dirty. The truck also is great on the stock pinion on either 2 or 3s, I've found the truck to have plenty of pull and speed, it certainly is no slow truck. Overall I would say I am very happy with the truck, for an RTR in 2022 it is 90% of what I would want, only a few things here and there I plan on upgrading on it. The spektrum electronics and receiver/ transmitter are great, the motor and ESC are essentially just rebranded Hobbywing stuff so you know its good, the ESC is also very easy to program without a programmer box as well. The receiver and transmitter are easy to use. It is nice the front drive shafts are also some nice metal CVD's which I don't think even the hammer rey comes with. Other than that, that's about all I have to say about it. The long travel and damped suspension is really a ton of fun on the truck and although many people can say it would handle like a sloppy SC truck, that's not what the point of the Baja Rey is. It's not really supposed to be for racing, it's for drifting and smashing loose and all kinds of off-road terrain, and looking amazing while it's doing it. I have a SC10 Pro4 which I love, it's a great SC truck, but the Baja Rey especially with the full cage and bolt on body and huge suspension just looks so much better. Speaking on the scaliness of the truck for a bit, when you drive it, it sways and dives and squats just like a real truck, I know some would say it tips over easy, but if anyone who knows Baja or trophy truck racing, they know there's plenty of tipping over and rolling, so I would say that the truck tipping over is part of the scale experience! I think it's a really fun added element to the truck because it is very realistic, I think if you scaled it up, it would be the same as real trick truck. It may not be as easy to drive but that also is part of the fun I think with this truck, this may be subject to opinion, but for 500 dollars your basically getting the same driving experience of a modern $700,000 trick truck, but obviously scaled down. If you wanted to you could even modify the Baja Rey to be better at jumping you would just need some heavier oil and springs, as well as some weight distribution. But of course that would compromise your scale performance and make the suspension too stiff for the "Baja" or desert style of running this truck is supposed to be for. One thing I would recommend right away before you run it is to turn the preload adjuster on the front shocks pretty much all the way down. I have mine about 3 or 4 threads from the most you could turn it down. Turning the back shocks about 1/4 of the total is also a good idea, out of the box the truck comes with all of the preload collars all the way up. I noticed that the truck is much better with the preload almost all the way down on the front, other wise the truck will be very nose heavy and have a hard time maintaining a good ride height, as well as it will catch a lot of ground objects as well if it is low. I saw other guys have already said it on here but aluminum tape on all four wheel wells is a must because of the tire rub. You will probably want to shoe goo and drywall tape the body before you run it (I did) if you want to keep your body for a while, they are not cheap at 91 bucks a pop for the pre printed and decaled ones. If you can I would also recommend to store the truck with all the wheels off the ground, it is a heavier truck and it will let your springs last longer possibly especially since you will need quite a bit of preload already on the srpings. Anyways, it's a great truck and Losi did a great job with it. Cheers.
I would have to agree with the other reviewer, the negative reviews do not correspond to the quality of this truck. This thing is flipping awesome. For scale driving, I don't think it gets any better than the Baja Rey. The truck is durable, although I am going to go back and reinforce the body panels with shoe-goo and dry-wall tape. After a dozen or more packs, I have torn the body by the front fender. Also, place aluminum tape in your wheel wells or your tires will wear through the paint. One more thing, after a couple packs, I had to crank down the shock collars, no big deal, I think the truck was designed that way.
Being realistic, this truck is harder to drive, i.e. you will roll over on high traction surfaces if you drive it like a basher. You need to be easy on the throttle. Where this truck really shines is in sand or dirt, where you can get on the throttle. Also, when jumping in my experience, to prevent donkey kicking, you need to accelerate off the jump. If you just go full throttle or even half throttle, not accelerating, the rear end of the truck kicks up. I have not run the truck on 3s, I actually think that would detract from the scale driving experience. The truck seems amazingly fast on 2s to me.
In summary, in my opinion, this truck was not made for bashing, sending it to the moon, or ramming into curbs, light posts, rocks, etc. This truck was built for a scale driving experience which it excels at. You can jump the truck, because I certainly have. However, this truck is no Maxx or Granite or whatever. I have probably run this RC more than any other RC that I have. I have the Tenacity DB Pro, Tenacity SCT Pro, Traxxas Rally, and an Arrma Senton among various on road Kyosho Fazers.
It's an amazing trophy truck, even better than the UDR. It has amazing suspension and is fast. Unfortunately, they removed the dynamite electronics and put in spektrum ones because dynamite no longer sells the motor and the esc the Baja Rey uses. Also, you should get a stronger servo with this, the stock one is only 9kg. So get a 25+kg servo.
Stripped axle first battery. Super whack. They got monkeys assembling rcs more now than ever. But I get it, demand is high in these times. But thats not the customers problem. As we were. -odd garage
What is 45mph? I placed an order that I wanted to try. And I like trophy trucks. It was the correct answer to choose this Baja Ray, which has a structure similar to that of an actual vehicle, among many types. It's a very fast car, but it's a very powerful and fun RC car because the machine supports it.
You can select the power to 50%, 75%, or 100%. I think 75% is as fast. Fuel economy is a big eater. It is better to have multiple batteries.
I’ve owned this truck for roughly an hour, and I’m already deeply regretting this purchase. I’ve owned Losi’s going back to the JRX2, and I’ve never had a bad experience. Until now.
1. The front tires balloon to the point they hit the body, going in a straight line. This is quite annoying, especially the horrible sound it makes. But after half a battery, there are black tire marks on my brand new body. I guess I’ll have to add a heavy oil to the center diff… like Losi should have.
2. This brand new truck cogs bad when you are taking off from a dead stop. This is not acceptable. It’s clearly geared too high from the factory, and will require a smaller pinion to be installed.
3. The battery compartment is not deep enough for most standard 3s batteries. Of all of my batteries, I had one that fit, and it was quite tight.
4. Out of the box, one of the LEDs in my light bar was dead. Quality control anyone?
I don’t feel these issues are me being over critical. This is a 1/10 scale truck that costs $500. It should not be something I have to perform major work to, just to make it right. It was a decision between this and an Arrma notorious. I chose poorly.
The vehicle is great but the customer service sucked. Which is sad considering how much money I spend on this site..
