Hobbywing EZRun MAX6 G2 Sensored Brushless ESC & Motor Combo
Ran my max6 G2 for a good 20 runs until it just shut off mid run, and now whenever I try running any current through it it'll die. This is my second one of these.

Hobbywing EZRun MAX6 G2 Sensored Brushless ESC & Motor Combo
Update: 07/10/2024
I'm not sure what happened, but the caps blew out on me on my second bash session. I was running zeee 120C 6S 5000mah lipo's with 20/50 gearing. Temps were good, performance seemed fine. I landed a jump I've hit many times and it just stopped. It powered off. I pressed the power button and it came back on, but shut off again when it did the first motor beep it usually does on boot. Then I noticed there was some sort of shmoo around the capacitor area on the esc, servo, chassis and body.

I was right at 35 days after getting it when it happened. I contacted hobbywing and they gave me 3 options:
1 - pay shipping, return it and have it inspected, if it was faulty, they send me a new one. If it was deemed user error, I get $10 off a new one.
2 - Pay shipping, send it in, they send me a new one for $90 (plus shipping).
3 - Get a new one for $103 (plus shipping)

I went with #3 and they also gave me healthy discount on the 1 year warranty ($9 vs $29.99).

I had already ordered a new one from amain, so the one from HW directly will be a spare. I'll install the one I get from amain since it's here already, but I'll be adding the 6x1800uf cap pack to it as well and hope that fixes the issue.

So far so good.

I had 3 of the older max6v3's in service and my kraton had the max6v3/4985-1650kv combo in it. I had run into issues where the esc truck would stop and the esc would show a 5 green blink led code. I couldn't find anywhere what that meant, but did find in the firma160 manual that it was the capacitors overheating. So, I added an 1800uf x 6 cap pack which seemed to help. It would still stop on occasion, but had to be a 80F+ day and usually during the end of the 2nd or middle of the 3rd 6200mah pack run through it, back to back.

With a coupon, I was able to get the g2 system for $220 shipped, so figured I'd give it a shot.

Installation went ok, I cut about 3 inches off the motor wires as they were much longer than the old 4985's and I didn't want to have all that wire flopping around. After some creative ziptie'ing, I was able to get the sensor wire/motor wires all buttoned up nicely. I had to reroute my motor cooler fans to the receiver though as the max6g2 doesn't have a fan/program port on it like the old one. I replaced the fan in the esc with a surpass/rocket alloy framed 35mm fan. It fit in without much issue. I run that off the receiver power also so it's always on. The motor has a Powerhobby PHMount03 fan holder with 2 40mm surpass/rocket alloy framed fans. The BEC set to 7.4V. I'm also running a HobbyStar HCS-4521 servo.

Bluetooth worked well on my bench. I kept the same gearing as before (20T pinion) as that's enough speed for me, I set the punch/brake the same as the max6v3. I didn't wire in the cap pack as I wanted to see how this did on it's own. After running a pack through it, I wanted to change some settings and see what the "log" showed. I had run the pack to LVC and apparently it won't link when at LVC. I plugged in a fresh pack, then I was able to link and make adjustments. TBH, I was fine using the program box on the old one.

With the punch set similar to the old system, I found that the throttle felt muted and the brakes were too aggressive, 50% punch/50% brake. I increased the punch one notch and decreased the brakes one notch, then it felt more familiar. Still a hair on the lazy side, but once I got used to it, it was ok. I don't like running super high punch as it just beats up the drive train and since I don't ever try doing standing backflips, I just put the punch up to as high as I need it to get it to respond well in the air and off the face of a jump.

I ran 1 5200mah 120C and 2 6200mah 40C packs through it back to back with the only downtime being when my pinion loosened/slid forward and my front cvd popped out of the diff cup. Otherwise it was constantly in motion. I only have one bash on it so far, so will see how it does as time goes on.

This is the edited footage from the bash:

Great powerful esc with built in bluetooth. Absolutely no complaints. And with lots of adjustability. I bought this system for the new Team Associated sr7 Hoonicorn and it’s a perfect fit with no mods necessary.
