The Solution: Plastic spur gear! I reached out to FMS, explained the issue, and they sent me a replacement transmission with a plastic spur. No more shredded pinions, and everything transmission-wise works great now.
The two-speed transmission is fantastic! You can pop it into high gear to scoot around or drop it into low gear for more torque. That said, let’s be real—stock, this is more of a trail-runner than a crawler. The heavy body makes it top-heavy and prone to rolling over. My fix? Steel driveshafts and brass wheel weights, which improved stability and made it more capable. It’s way less likely to roll now and handles trails much better.
Features I Love:
-The light buckets are a great touch! I wired up the roof rack lights myself, which required some body modifications, but it was totally worth it. I’ve got mine set up for high beams, standard lights, and brights. It looks amazing, and I tinted the windows to hide the LED wiring.
-The Hobbywing Mini24 ESC upgrade was another highlight. It works with the stock brushed motor and gives you on-the-fly drag brake adjustment, which is perfect for trail running. The stock ESC/receiver has its perks—it’s compact and efficient, giving about an hour on a 2S 600mAh battery—but I wanted more functionality and compatibility with my FlySky GT5 transmitter. With the upgraded ESC, I get about 45 minutes of runtime, which is a fair tradeoff for the added control.
The Downsides:
-The stock servo is a weak point. It’s an odd small size, and the plastic gears don’t last. Mine broke within three months, and I’m still searching for a durable replacement.
-FMS parts availability is a challenge. Some parts need to be ordered directly from FMS in China, which means $15 shipping for a $2 part. It adds up fast, so I recommend buying two cars instead of one to have spares on hand.
Finally, I threw on some JConcepts Tusks, and now this rig looks as mean as it performs! Despite the initial hiccups, I love this little buddy. aMain’s customer service also made things right with my transmission issues, so props to them.
