The passion at FliteTest is to introduce this great hobby to as many people as possible. It is also to make that journey as fun as possible. This design focuses on both goals more than anything. We learned a ton from the tiny trainer on the value of growing with one aircraft from 3 to 4 channel. We also learned that a landing gear adds another very important skill set and source of fun to every pilot. We did not want this design to end there.Versatility is also very important as well. The landing gear of the FT Simple Cub can be removed to either fly as a belly lander or on optional floats specially designed for this great little trainer.
The Simple Cub is both easy to build and easy to fly. In its most simple format, 11 separate pieces of foam is all that is required to build this plane. This makes for a build time under 2 hours. We took a great amount of inspiration from the Horizon Super Cub LP and the Blu Baby. Both are amazing designs that we all love and want to honor. The ability for the FT Simple cub to go from 3 channel (rudder, elevator, and throttle) to 4 channel (rudder, elevator, aileron, and throttle) without building a new wing. The aileron mod only takes 15 minutes to add and opens a world of options like flaperons and aerobatic flying. If dropping foam bombs for target practice is your fancy, the same servo will double as drop mechanisms while still keeping the great flight characteristics as the original 3 channel format. Your support, feedback, and passion for flight is the reason we are here today! Thank you for choosing the FT Simple Cub and for your support through your purchase. We are confident that this design is possibly the most rewarding to build, fly, and modify creations that we have ever created. We can’t wait to see how many memories, pilots, and modifications come from our great FT Family!

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
The FT Simple Cub is, as advertised, the perfect trainer, but is also a great bush plane and sport flyer as well. I have had mine for over a year, and it is still one of my go-to, favorite planes.
When I built it, I already had a firm handle on 4-channel flight, having about a year on a Champ S+ and some experience with a Mighty Mini Sportster. For starters, I built it as a 3-channel, however, because I wanted to try out the bomb drop mod featured on the release video. The build experience was really smooth; it is definitely the ideal first build. The larger size (as compared to the planes like the Mini Scout) offered plenty of working room when it came to installing servos, etc.
The bomb drops I found a little disappointing. The bombs would tend to stick, making aiming sketchy at best. They were fun, but after a few flights, I was ready to upgrade to ditch the bombs and use those servos for ailerons.
This is probably the best part about this Cub: it can grow with you as your skill level progresses. From a 3-channel that could serve as your very first plane, you can add the bombs, then move on up to a 4-channel very easily. This is when the Cub started to really come into its own. Compared to the trainer-type aircraft I had already flown, it was very responsive and aerobatic. I made great strides in my skill level as I practiced loops, rolls, hammerheads, and some inverted flight. I also programmed flaperons to enable it to fly even slower. They are 100% not needed, but it gave me another avenue of advancing my skill with the same airplane.
Now, a year later, my skill level is well beyond finding this plane challenging, but I still love to fly it because it's just so docile, relaxing, and capable at the same time.
While this plane is designed to be a primary trainer, I personally would advise a ready-to-fly package like the Sport Cub S or similar as a "teach yourself to fly" plane. If you have someone to help you, or access to a simulator, then this would be a good plane to go to. If you do crash it, I have found that it takes a hit pretty well. I've crashed it for real a couple of times (once into a tree and once when I accidentally hit the throttle cut on takeoff) and had countless hard landings, and it hasn't showed more damage than just a little scraping on the nose and a couple broken rubber bands.
About the only thing negative I have to say about the FT Simple Cub is that, while easy to fly, it is challenging to land, particularly on grass. With its high center of mass, it is very difficult to put it down without nosing over. Possibly some large tires (larger than the 2.75" ones shown in the picture) would assist in roll outs on the grass.
So that's an overview of my experience with the Cub and what I think of it. It makes a good trainer, but shouldn't be overlooked by more experienced flyers either, as it offers some great flying characteristics and personality.
Hope this helps!

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
Great plane to start on and learn how to do repairs upon repairs to the front of the plane. :) I recommend using props that would be used for a drone that way they bend easier and last easier.

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
Started with foam builds back in 2006 but after my first child free time became a rarity. Nearly 10 years later my kids are old enough and have shown an interest in the hobby and this was a great first build. We did the scratch build and the kids traced the parts while I did the cutting. Plane flew great right out the gate, even survived the few crashes we had. Suggest forgoing the wheels in even medium grass since it tends to nose over despite my best efforts. Can’t wait to build another DIY aircraft!

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
I have scratch built this one. It flies great as a 3 channel. Very athletic and easy to fly. Program some flaperons and you can do some really slow flying with perfect control. I would imagine that the speed build kit would work even better due to its laser cut components.

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
I have not flown this plane yet, but the build experience for me was excellent. Josh did a great job explaining everything, and all the parts went together perfectly. The plane looks great, and the optional ailerons went on without a hitch! 100% worth it, I am glad to say!

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
Awesome design, easy to scratch build and to fly. What an amazing plane! I'm 45 but when I was young (10-15), people were flying cubs near my house. They were gaz airplanes and everything costed a lot. Things have changed with Flite Test and Ebay. Thanks to you guys! I realized my young dreams with this great addition to your squadron.

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
I am happy to say the build and flying experience is superb with the FT simple cub. The free downloadable plans are easy to follow and well done. Also, If you are lazy (time efficient, a nicer way to put it;)) the speed build kit comes in at a very reasonable price, and Josh does a great job in the build video explaining how to complete each step. It has plenty of power in using an emax 2215 motor on a 1000mah 3 cell lipo, but be sure to get spare props, because you are sure to break them in a hard crash with the nose. I am excited to use this plane in the future for bomb drops, water, snow, etc. I highly recommend the FT simple cub, and if you do get it, I also recommend getting the crafty kit, because it will make your building experience much faster and easier. Looking forward to the "Mega cub" hopefully coming in their giant series soon! Enjoy!

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
I scratch built the cub and in return got a lot of frustration and crashes.
I had a very negative experience on the swappable power pod as I could not stop it breaking at the top and giving me a negative thrust angle.
I can see how people find this plane a good trainer as I did get it to fly but not at all well. I think this is a decent design but just the power pod let it down majorly for me.
If you have the power pod built without issues like me then this would be 4/5 star. I have built about 15 flite test designs and this has been my worst experience yet. I begun with the simple scout and found it a much better flying plane even with my bad building skills at the time.

Flite Test Simple Cub Electric Airplane Kit (956mm)
I'm changing my review to a one (1) star for the reason that I can NOT get any TECHNICAL assistance for connecting and testing MOTOR ROTATION and SERVO CENTERING using the servo tester. I have made four requests for assistance. The first (case #84250) from Fred showed some connection which promptly burned up the ESC unit. Requests two and three went unanswered. The fourth request suggested I buy a 3 volt battery. The electronics are the most expensive part of the Kit yet have the least amount of instructions.
I would have given you rave reviews ,but the videos on the assembly and connection of the power pod components are terrible. I think the kit was an amassing of random components. Nothing I received in this kit comes close to the items shown in the videos. I'm still confused about the servo centering, so I bought the Servo Tester, Guess what , it does not contain any instructions !!(Take a chance and burn up the servos ???) There is connector that I have no idea where it is supposed to attach to
The good news, the Airplane itself was beautiful, the instructions in the video were clear concise and easy to follow.
