This is the Estes Nike Smoke Pro Series II Rocket Kit. NASA's Nike program produced ground to air defense missiles, but the Nike Smoke was NASA's sounding rocket. The nose cone was filled with a titanium tetrachloride solution that would leave a winding smoke trail that scientists could use for photographic analysis to provide information regarding high altitude wind patterns in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Estes Nike Smoke 1 to 5.5 scale model is a must have addition to any rocket lovers collection. This rocket launches on big composite motors and has through the wall fin mounting. An impressive feature found on this rocket is the quick release motor retention system (also available separately). Though massive looking, the construction of this kit is not difficult and the building and finish work can easily be accomplished over the course of a few days.
