Arrma Gorgon 4X2 MEGA 550 Brushed 1/10 Monster Truck RTR (Blue)
For the price, I think the Gorgon provides for the most 1/10th scale 2wd monster truck value for the money out there currently (as of March 2024). I bought this specifically for my 7 yr old son's birthday present and so far, he is really enjoying it. I have r/c experience going back to the 1980s and I generally do kit builds myself (losi/associated back in the 80s/90s and most recently Tekno). This is my first arrma or really any 1/10th scale RTR since probably a traxxas "the cat" way back when.

Anyways, I opted to get the gorgon without the nimh battery and charger as I already had a 2s 5200mah lipo with deans connector. I did get an adapter to use with my deans connector battery. In the long run I may change everything to xt60 or deans, but it is fine for now.

So for me, it was just a matter of having the battery connector adapter and then setting the 2S lipo jumper setting on the ESC. Easy enough and then off and running.

My son has driven an Associated sc28 , kyosho mini-z and similar smaller rc vehicles so he was able to get going on the gorgon using 50% transmitter throttle setting without any problem. He is now using 75% throttle setting and practicing slowing down for turns (gorgon rolls over somewhat easily, as the vehicle CG is more top heavy) and touching the brake mid jump so as to bring down the front end on the stunt jump ramp I have.

As far as durability, we only have a few packs into it ...so far no issues. Based on Facebook groups and YouTube reviews, the consensus is that the plastic gear servo and plastic servo saver could be a weak area to watch out for. And the body, depending on crashes and such, is bound to eventually deteriorate and crack/break.
So, I'm anticipating some future fixes/replacements (metal gear servo, aluminum servo saver maybe) but am prepared for that potential cost. One thing I noted from my research is that the BEC output from the stock ESC is only 5V, so any future replacement servo needs to have an operating voltage of like 4.8v to 6v. Stay away from servos that are power hungry and/or require higher voltage.

I drove it myself at 100% transmitter throttle and did a few stunt ramp jumps and using a tap of the brake mid jump was able to keep the landings relatively level. The tires and suspension are generally enjoyable...the gorgon is at home in our yard, paved driveway or one our gravel street. The speed will be more than plenty for my 7 yr old to grow into and I thought it was lively enough with the 2S and stock electronics. It is a fun 1/10th scale 2wd offering from Arrma. I would have preferred the RTA kit to give my son a chance to learn how to put it together with my help, but that kit comes with the nimh battery and charger which I did not want. We will eventually do a tear down, replace shock oils and diff fluids and that sort of thing. As a note on shock and diff fluids, I've read that Arrma may not fill the diffs completely from the factory (or just use grease?) and I definitely hear an air pocket towards the tail end of all of the four shocks' travel/stroke . But keeping in mind the price and from what I've read from others, it was not unexpected to encounter and does not appear to impact functionality.

It is too bad arrma does not make actual kits, like a tekno or other r/c manufacturers. But I also understand that is just not their wheelhouse....RTR is.
