Multiply Your Flying Fun!
The Ares Shadow 240 is a feature-packed mini quadcopter that's ideal for both the absolute beginner and the experienced pilot. The advanced 6-axis stabilization system allows you both agile flight and maximum stability out of the box, and when you add Ares’ exclusive software package to the mix, both first-time and experienced pilots will have that ‘dialed in’ feel in flight. Plus, the two different control rates with the Shadow 240 help ease the learning curve and allow the fun to continue as your flying skills grow.
Powerful LEDs and an innovative, color-coded lighting system with specially designed light bars make the futuristic design of the Shadow 240 visible at any angle, and flying just as easy in the dark. When you’re ready for a whole new perspective, just clip on the modular WiFi FPV camera (sold separately) and be in the pilot’s seat as you fly around the house or outside in light winds. The image is streamed real time to your mobile device, which can be conveniently attached to your transmitter. Plus, the same accessories that fit previous generations of similar class Ares quadcopters will also fit the Shadow 240. So, you can easily add a rocket launcher, a water blaster squirt gun, a bubble machine that puts out a trail of bubbles, or a working winch for even more flying fun.
The Ares Shadow 240 is a RTF (Ready-To-Fly) aircraft, so the attractive, durable airframe arrives 100% factory-assembled. Everything needed to fly is in the box, including AA batteries for the 2.4GHz technology-equipped standard size 4-channel transmitter, a 780mAh 1S 3.7V LiPo battery and an AC charger for convenient charging from almost any outlet.

It's a great place to start. The Shadow is a fast lightweight drone that does not need to be registered. The down sides to it I found were while moving in a horizontal direction it loses altitude quickly as well as I burnt out 4 motors in the first week to blade strikes. Other than that it's a great fly. The Shadow is quick and nimble, perfect either to start with or just for the fun of it.
As for battery life I was getting about 12-15 mins each.
Purchased with WiFi Camera, Digital Camera, and Extra battery.
Great entry to intermediate quad, the Shadow 240 RTF has good battery life, excellent flight characteristics, and awesome peripherals.
From the first flight to the most recent, this quad has great performance for the money, easy to fly and maintain. Flight times without any peripherals is about 10 ~ 12 minutes, this is dependant maneuvers and aerobatics performed. Attaching either cameras will drop the flight time down to about 5 to 7 minutes.
Flying the Shadow is absolutely awesome! Took it out on the first day - sans reading the instructions - it was very intuitive. Place the quad on the ground with the battery connected (lights flashing), turn on the remote (beeping), when they are paired, the lights will be steady on the drone and beeping on the remote will cease.
The remote has the typical controls and trim, with sensitivity control. Sensitivity control helps get used to the responsiveness of the drone by damping the axis response when flying - great for beginners. Also, the bonus 'flip' button, had lots of fun with this. Make sure you have some room to perform this maneuver. To invoke it, press the flip button on the left, hit the right 'roll' axis on the control and it will flip perpendicular to that axis.
The WiFi FPV camera is also simple to use, plug into the correct port (3rd from the left, with rear of drone facing way). Download the App WiFi UFO, log into the camera and go. The WiFi camera is limited to the distance your phone can receive - about 100 feet (30.48m) and is limited by the antenna position (i.e. facing you or away). Great camera for the money, recorded video direct to my phone and it was awesome; albeit, no sound.
As for the Digital Camera (still and video) it recorded well, but it picked up some vibration while in video mode. It is recommended to get a larger SD card in order to get a full flight. Use of this camera is not limited to your WiFi connection and has slightly better battery life - this is subjective at this point.
Overall, this is a great unit by itself or if you decide to add a camera. Sadly, I did not get the squirt gun or bubble machine - that is later. One important thing, the parts for this are amazingly low - well relatively. So if you take out a motor or prop no worries, they will cost less than a Happy Meal... Hope this review helps and have a safe and fun flight if you purchase this unit.
